Rúben Guerreiro é a
nova jovem estrela lusa do WorldTour.
Com apenas 22 anos de idade, o campeão nacional Sub-23 entra em 2017 no
grandioso mundo da norte-americana Trek-Segafredo, partilhando equipa com o
português André Cardoso e o campeão espanhol Alberto Contador.
O caminho trilhado por
Rúben Guerreiro pontuou-se de êxitos cruciais, que determinaram a sua entrada
em 2015 na maior equipa internacional de formação, a Axeon Hagens Berman. Como referimos
no passado, a Fibra de Guerreiro fez o jovem corredor agarrar com todo o
seu talento a oportunidade surgida pelas mãos de Axel Merckx.
Quando deixou o pelotão
nacional, Rúben Guerreiro fechou esse ano de 2014 com a vitória da Volta a Portugal do Futuro, a vitória da Taça de Portugal Sub-23 e melhor sub-23 do Ranking APCP Ciclista do Ano. No ano seguinte rumou à Axeon Hagens Berman,
onde ao longo de dois anos cimentou nas mais importantes provas além-fronteiras o poderio demonstrado em Portugal. As vitórias surgiram logo em 2015 com o
triunfo do GP Liberty Seguros e conquistando em 2016 o GP Palio del Recioto,
ano em que subiu ao 3º lugar do pódio da Liège-Bastogne-Liège U23 e se sagrou
campeão nacional de fundo. De carácter forte e dono de aguerridas performances,
Guerreiro destacou-se entre os melhores jovens nas mais sonantes provas
americanas como o Amgen Tour of California 2016, no qual finalizou no 3º lugar
da juventude e 13º da geral.
No
ano de 2017, Rúben Guerreiro entra no WorldTour
pela equipa Trek-Segafredo e o jovem campeão nacional falou ao Cycling &
Thoughts sobre esta importante fase da sua carreira. “O
contacto com a equipa Trek-Segafredo já tinha surgido há algum tempo. Desde que
ganhei a Volta a Portugal do Futuro, a equipa seguia-me e no final da época de 2015 tive a oportunidade de fazer um estágio com a equipa e desde aí fiquei
muito impressionado.”
“Os
meus objectivos passam sobretudo por aprender e ajudar os meus colegas. Este
ano a equipa reforçou-se muito bem e espero estar ao nível de ser importante no
apoio aos líderes.”
Rúben
Guerreiro leva consigo uma experiência de dois anos passados na Axeon Hagens
Berman. “A passagem na Axeon foi muito boa, cresci
como pessoa e ciclista, tal como nos meus primeiros dois anos com o chefe
Manuel Correia [na equipa lusa do Sport Ciclismo S. João de Ver]. Na Axeon tive a oportunidade de fazer as
melhores corridas Sub-23 e as melhores corridas nos Estados Unidos da América,
onde ganhei mais experiência e bagagem para este novo desafio que se segue.”
Na
Trek-Segafredo, Rúben Guerreiro tem a oportunidade de correr ao lado de um dos
mais conceituados ciclistas portugueses, André Cardoso, bem como do vencedor
das três grandes voltas Alberto Contador. “É um orgulho
enorme, sempre segui a carreira do André e sempre foi uma referência para mim.
Foi meu colega de quarto no passado estágio [em Espanha no mês de Dezembro]
e a nossa relação é óptima. Estou sempre
a aprender com ele e espero fazer muitas corridas com ele. Com Alberto é um
orgulho enorme também, aprecio o seu carácter e a sua capacidade de liderança,
por isso, vai ser muito bom tê-lo como chefe de fila.”

Rúben Guerreiro: “It’s an honor to ride with André Cardoso and Alberto Contador”
Rúben Guerreiro is the new young Portuguese star of the WorldTour. At the age of 22, the U23
national champion enters 2017 in the great world of the American
Trek-Segafredo, sharing team with the Portuguese André Cardoso and the Spanish
champion Alberto Contador.
The path taken by Rúben Guerreiro was marked by crucial successes, which
led to his entry into 2015 in the leading international development team Axeon
Hagens Berman. As we mentioned in the past, his “Spirit of Warrior” made the
young rider grab with all his talent the opportunity arisen by the hands of
Axel Merckx.
When he left the Portuguese peloton, Rúben Guerreiro closed that year of
2014 with the victory of the Volta a Portugal do Futuro, the U23 Portugal Cup
and being the best U23 of the APCP (Portuguese Association of ProfessionalCyclists) Ranking Cyclist of the Year. In the following year he headed to Axeon
Hagens Berman, where over two years he consolidated in the most important international
races the power demonstrated in Portugal. The victories emerged early in 2015 with
the win of GP Liberty Seguros and winning in 2016 the GP Palio del Recioto, the
year he climbed to the 3rd place on the Liège-Bastogne-Liège U23 podium and
became road national champion. With a strong character and owner of fierce
performances, Guerreiro stood out among the best young riders in the most
sounding American races like Amgen Tour of California 2016, in which he
finished 3rd of the youth classification and 13th GC.
In 2017, Rúben
Guerreiro joins the WorldTour with
the Trek-Segafredo team and the young national champion spoke to Cycling &
Thoughts about this important stage of his career. “The contact with the Trek-Segafredo team
had already happened some time ago. Since I won the Volta a Portugal do Futuro,
the team followed me and at the end of the 2015 season I had the opportunity to
do a training camp with the team and since then I was very impressed.”
“My goals are
mainly to learn and help my team-mates. This year the team has strengthened
very well and I hope to be at the level of being important in supporting the
leaders.”
Rúben
Guerreiro brings with him an experience of two years spent at Axeon Hagens
Berman. “The time at
Axeon was very good, I grew up as a person and as a cyclist, just like in my
first two years with the ‘Chef’ Manuel Correia [in the Portuguese team at
the Sport Ciclismo S. João de Ver]. At
Axeon I had the opportunity to do the best U23 races and the best races in the
United States, where I gained more experience and baggage for this new
challenge that follows.”
At
Trek-Segafredo, Rúben Guerreiro has the opportunity to race alongside one of
the most renowned Portuguese riders André Cardoso, as well as the winner of the
three Grand Tours Alberto Contador. “It's a huge honor, I've always followed
André's career and it's always been a reference to me. He was my roommate in
the last training camp [in Spain in December] and our relationship is great. I am always learning from him and I hope
to do many races with him. With Alberto is a huge honor as well, I appreciate
his character and his leadership skills, so it's going to be great to have him
as a leader.”
